About Us

Since its establishment in 1994 by publishers Jon and Rosie Ward-Allen, the Medlar Press has gained an enviable reputation for the publication of some of the finest fishing books in the world. These editions - of both classic and modern titles - reflect the growing revival of traditional angling values and a new vision of angling for the future .

The books cover all aspects of the noble art, and feature the written and illustrative work of some of the best anglers of all time - old and new; anglers like Jack Hargreaves, BB, Bernard Venables, Clive Gammon, Fred Buller, Chris Yates, Maurice Ingham, Peter Stone and H.T. Sheringham.

The Medlar Press prides itself on the quality of its book production, whether for its unlimited paperbacks or hardbacks, or for its short-run limited editions. All books are individually designed and illustrations are sought from brilliant, but often unknown, artists. The unlimited hardbacks are printed on high grade book paper, photographs are enhanced pre-press,  and their production is supervised for quality throughout. Many have dust-jackets. The limited edition titles are bound in traditional cloth or finest leather and require considerable skill in hand binding. These books have endpapers, headbands, ribbons and embossings, carefully chosen to complement the bindings. Throughout the website each title indicates whether it is limited (with the quantities in the edition) or unlimited.

In 1996 the magazine Waterlog was founded, with Chris Yates as co-editor, with the objective of providing good quality, albeit eccentric, reading matter in magazine format. The magazine is quarterly, and available on subscription. It has been described by some as the best angling magazine in the world, but readers need to judge this for themselves.
