The Toll House
M & A Ward
The humble toll house played a vital role in the building of Britain - symbols of a new and efficient road system linking every community in the land. In the early 17th century, travelling the roads of Britain was an extremely hazardous undertaking. No one took responsibility for the upkeep of roads, and robberies were rife. In 1663 the Turnpike Act was passed. Gates were set up to halt traffic, and money raised for repairs and improvements. Later, the Turnpike Trusts were established - but all did not go smoothly: riots broke out and some toll houses were attacked. These architecturally interesting houses are the main reminder of this important period of our transport history but so far little has been published about them. This book attempts to set that right with a pictorial appreciation of some surviving houses in England and Wales.
In a very personal journey, Michael and Audrey Ward travel back along the highways and byways to discover some of these unique buildings for themselves.
