The Mayfly and the Trout
Malcolm Greenhalgh
We all know how important the mayfly season is to trout fishermen but how much do we know about the mayfly itself? Possibly not a lot, which is why Malcolm has written this book.
'After an introduction that sets the tone perfectly by describing how mayfly fever reveals itself on the River Test and Ireland’s great loughs, the author describes the mayfly’s life history before the longest section of the book explores the attempts of fly anglers to imitate the mayfly from the 15th century to the present day. Then follows a listing of Mayfly
nymph, wet fly and dry fly variants, the latter subdividing into sections on winged, wingless and spinners . . . I counted 37 flies photographed . . . although tying materials are listed for many more. The book closes with nine essays by the author and an anthology of 12 more by other writers, all of which describe the context in which Mayflies have been put to work on rivers and lakes in Britain and Ireland, as well as conveying the fervour of mayfly season. As a ‘biography’ of the mayfly and an explanation of the place it occupies in the fly angler’s world, this book will take some beating.' - Jeffrey Priest in Trout Fisherman.
